How to choose a flexible tooth harrow for your tractor and farm size
A flexible tooth harrow helps conserve moisture, level the field, break up clods and prepare the topsoil for sowing. To perform these tasks effectively, the machine must be matched to your tractor and farm conditions.
Start with tractor power, but also consider the area to be cultivated, soil type, field size, tine design and ease of transport. We will examine these criteria using Green Way flexible tooth harrows manufactured by Avers-Agro as an example.

1. Start with tractor power
The harrow’s working width must match the tractor’s pulling capacity. An excessively wide machine may force you to reduce speed, preventing the farm from achieving the expected increase in work rate.
The specifications below provide an initial guide to the trailed Green Way models.
| Model | Working width, m | Tractor power, from | Indicative work rate, ha/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Way 5.3 | 5.28 | 90 hp | 6.3 |
| Green Way 5.7 | 5.7 | 95 hp | 7.0 |
| Green Way 6.2 | 6.2 | 100 hp | 7.6 |
| Green Way 6.7 | 6.7 | 110 hp | 8.2 |
| Green Way 7.2 | 7.2 | 120 hp | 8.6 |
| Green Way 9 | 9.12 | 150 hp | 11.3 |
| Green Way 11.5 | 11.52 | 190 hp | 13.8 |
| Green Way 14 | 14.4 | 240 hp | 17.28 |
| Green Way 17 | 17.28 | 300 hp | 20.7 |
| Green Way 18 | 18.24 | 320 hp | 21.8 |
| Green Way 21 | 21.12 | 340 hp | 25.3 |
| Green Way 24 | 24.0 | 400 hp | 28.8 |

Work rates are indicative. Actual performance depends on working speed, soil conditions, terrain and field shape. Before ordering, confirm compatibility with your specific tractor model.

Trailed Green Way 5.3–7.2 m models suit tractors from 90 to 120 hp, depending on the machine’s working width.
2. Calculate the area you need to cultivate per day
Consider not only the farm’s total area but also the number of hectares that must be cultivated within a short agronomic window.
For example, a farm needs to prepare 600 ha in five days. The actual work rate required is therefore around 120 ha per day.
For an initial estimate, multiply the harrow’s hourly work rate by the number of working hours:
Area per shift = work rate in ha/h × number of hours.
For the Green Way 11.52 m, the calculation for eight hours is:
13.8 ha/h × 8 h = 110.4 ha.
This is a calculated area without allowing for downtime. Headland turns, travel between fields, adjustments and servicing reduce actual output, so allow a margin of capacity when choosing a model.

Select the working width according to the area that must be cultivated within the available time.
3. Consider field size and location
On large fields, a wide harrow reduces the number of passes. On smaller, irregularly shaped plots, turning and manoeuvring take up more time.
Before choosing, assess:
- the average size and shape of your fields;
- the number of journeys between fields during the working day;
- the width of entrances, roads and gates;
- any narrow sections along transport routes;
- the space available for storing the machine.
Check transport dimensions separately from working width. For example, the Green Way 21 has a working width of 21.12 m and a transport width of 3 m, while the Green Way Euro 24 has a working width of 24 m and a transport width of 3 m.
Before travelling, also consider the transport length and height of the specific model.

4. Define the operating conditions and soil type
The same harrow can perform differently on light and heavy soils. Moisture, compaction, crop residue levels, working depth and tine angle all affect the load.
Before selecting a model, define the main task: moisture conservation, seedbed preparation, levelling after cultivation or managing crop residues.
For heavy and compacted areas, Green Way can be fitted with heavy-duty sections with reinforced tines behind the tractor wheels. These loosen compacted wheel tracks more intensively. This option requires approximately 10 hp of additional tractor power.

Optional heavy-duty sections for more intensive cultivation of compacted wheel tracks.
5. Assess the tines and adjustment options
The machine’s width determines field coverage, while the working components determine how it acts on the soil.
Green Way flexible tooth harrows feature forged diamond-section tines made from 60С2А steel. The tines are arranged in 16 rows, and the flexible sections follow the field contours.
Six tine angle settings allow you to adjust cultivation intensity to the soil conditions and the task. Working depth is 2–8 cm.
When inspecting a harrow, consider tine shape, fastenings, ease of replacement and convenience of adjustment.

6. Check the frame, warranty and service
Frame design, pivot joints and the folding mechanism are important on a wide-working machine. Before buying, ask what tubing is used for the specific model’s frame and how servicing is organised.
Green Way flexible tooth harrow frames come with a three-year warranty.
Also clarify commissioning arrangements, the availability of spare tines and parts, service support and delivery terms in advance. It is useful to inspect machines after several seasons of work and speak to farms already using them.

When selecting a harrow, assess the frame design, joints and ease of servicing.
7. Look at the results in the field
A photo of the machine helps you assess its design, but seeing the results of its work is also important when choosing.
Look at cultivation uniformity across the working width, surface condition, residue distribution and the tracks behind the tractor wheels. Results are best compared under similar soil conditions and settings.

How to select a Green Way for your farm
To receive a well-founded recommendation, prepare five key details:
- Tractor model and power.
- The area to be cultivated and your preferred timeframe.
- Soil type and the main task for the harrow.
- Average field size and shape.
- Transport and storage constraints.
This will help you choose a working width and configuration suited to your farm’s actual conditions.
